Lack
of progress can mean two things: I didn't do anything or I ran into a
series of failures. The latter can be equally valuable as a successful
experiment. After all, we deal with failures most
of the time in research. I tend to be very nervous when my students
present me with perfect data upon their first try. A very important role
for a mentor is to help his/her students do trouble shooting. But the
students also need to learn how to communicate with their mentors, most
importantly, their observation on those failed experiments.
No
one was born a scientific writer. But no matter how awkward the first
step is, a mentor should always be willing to guide their students to
become a proficient writer, although it can be trying and frustrating at times.
If
you do not know how to approach a project, it's common. But be frank,
ask for help, show your mentor your motivation and willingness to learn.
If
you think your mentor has been unreasonable about your workload,
communicate with him/her. Point out that your current work is equally
important to the lab.
A mentor usually allows the students to choose from several topics. If nothing in the lab interests you, you should quit.
There
is never a perfect environment/condition to do research. A good
researcher will try every means to circumvent the hurdles and get
things done. Again, conmmunicate with your mentor, he/she might know
resources you don’t know.
No
body expects a student to know everything. But you need to let your
mentor know what your deficiencies are and show him/her your willingness
to learn.
Sorry, can't help with this one. No one should take graduate student as a job, it is a career path.
The bottom line is: be positive, constructive, and keep communicating. Approach the research, not your mentor, aggressively.
