1 This Standard sets out minimum requirements for the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Part 1 of this Standard will be called up as a verification method for compliance with the New Zealand Building Code in Approved Documents B1: Structure -General, B2: Durability and C4: Structural stability in fire.
2 It is applicable to structures and parts of structures constructed in accordance with the materials and workmanship requirements of NZS 3109.
3 This Standard shall apply to buildings and special purpose and/or heavy engineering structures which are within the scope of clause 1.1.1 of NZS 4203. Concrete structures which are outside of this scope, such as those relying on other loadings or material design documents, are considered as alternative solutions and their compliance with the New Zealand Building Code may need to be demonstrated.
4 Design using procedures and/or material properties not described in this Standard shall be permitted only when it can be shown by one of the following methods that the concrete elements so designed have adequate performance at the serviceability limit state and at the ultimate limit state:
(a) A special study; or
(b) Experimental verification; or
? Rational design based on accepted engineering principles.
Such designs are outside the scope of this Standard as a verification method demonstrating compliance with the New Zealand Building Code and must be treated as alternative solutions.
