腎上腺素和去甲腎上腺素分別是兒茶酚胺、腎上腺素和去腎上腺素的代謝產物[1]。已知來源于神經內分泌腫瘤（如嗜鉻細胞瘤和副神經節瘤）的細胞會產生兒茶酚胺，兒茶酚胺通過膀胱分泌到血流中[2，3]。但除此之外，一小部分兒茶酚胺在腫瘤細胞內代謝為相應的兒茶酚胺代謝產物，即甲腎上腺素、去甲腎上腺素（在多巴胺的情況下為3-甲氧基酪胺），這些代謝產物以低水平持續分泌到血流中[4，5]。
