建筑防水即為防止水對建筑物某些部位的滲透而從建筑材料上和構造上所采取的措施。防水材料的種類，按原材料來分，有瀝青類防水材料、橡膠塑料類防水材料、水泥類防水材料、金屬類防水材料。防水涂料有四大類：硬性灰漿、柔性灰漿、丙烯酸酯、單組分聚氨酯。按性狀，防水材料還有防水卷材、聚氨酯防水材料、聚合物水泥基防水材料之分。

柔性防水材料，多為瀝青，油氈等有機材料亦稱油氈卷材防水層，它是由油氈、玻璃布等纖維織物做胎層的卷材，用各類膠結材料如瀝青等，將卷材粘結在屋頂結構板上的找平層上而形成的防水層。柔性防水材料拉伸強度高、延伸率大質量輕、施工方便，但操作技術要求較嚴，耐穿刺性和耐老化性能不如剛性材料，易老化，壽命短。
