鎳鎘電池是常用的二次電池。目前使用的鎳鎘電池，外形如干電池，也是小型化的堿性蓄電池。它以金屬鎘為負極，氫氧化鎳[Ni(OH) 3 ]為正極，氫氧化鉀溶液為電解質。放電時，鎘被氧化成氫氧化鎘，氫氧化鎳還原為氫氧化亞鎳[Ni(OH) 2 ]。充電時，把直流電源的正極跟電池有 號的極相連，這一極成為陽極，使氫氧化亞鎳氧化成氫氧化鎳。把電源的負極跟電池有“-”號的極相連，這一極成為陰極，使氫氧化鎘還原為金屬鎘。電壓約為1.5V。
